An Introduction to Me

An Introduction to Me

I am a 21-year-old student in my final year of my bachelor of business (Honors) degree within the marketing stream, I am studying at SETU Waterford. My first year in college was online through Zoom due to the pandemic, my second year was hybrid, meaning it was partly online and partly in person. In my third year, we had to decide which stream to focus on and in the second semester of my third year, we were given the options of studying abroad, teaching placements, work placement, or an enterprise start-up. I chose to part take in the work placement as I have no interest in a teaching placement or starting up a mini company and studying abroad would be too expensive.

My work placement took place in Camida in Clonmel which is a pharmaceutical company, I was offered a position there for my placement by the owner as he is a close family friend. My placement was six months long (16th January to 14th July), I was originally supposed to do 6 weeks in each department (Administration, Accounting, Sourcing, Logistics), although after my first week and a half in the company and within the administration department, an employee within the sourcing department was resigning so I was moved to the sourcing department for the remainder of my placement.

In sourcing the sourcing specialist acts as the middleman for customers to obtain materials, so instead of them going to 25 different suppliers for different products they can contact us directly, and we will then contact multiple different suppliers regarding these products and find the best deals. I was involved with the admin side of it as I was not in contact with the suppliers or customers, so I was creating and updating enquiry forms and sample forms, and uploading files to the databases.

Information systems used in my work placement:

·        SharePoint services: Enquiry forms, Portals for each department, Secure customer portal.

·        Access services: Sample Logs, Safety Data Sheet logs, and Certificate of Analysis logs.

·        Office Automation System: Email, Voice Mail, Database to keep track and store work hours to allow for flexi-time.

·        Cloud-based platforms: Zoom, Microsoft Teams, storing files.

The importance of information systems within the workplace

It gives them a competitive advantage as it allows them to return information to customers in a detailed and time-efficient manner, and it allows them to access past forms for details in regard to past suppliers of materials.

Having their databases and forms located digitally rather than on paper it allows for ease of access to past and current information and is time efficient as they do not have to go searching through boxes of files and folders on past products.

Cloud-based platforms are essential in the workplace especially if the workplace has more than one location or if they have remote working, Camida has a branch in the UK and they allow their employees to work from home occasionally. This is essential as it allows for easier methods of contacting each other and having more personal meetings with customers who are in different countries.
