In this blog we will be discussing three examples
of companies who have successfully implemented ERP systems to support their business
strategy and business model. An ERP system stands for Enterprise Resource
Planning, it is used by companies to customise, oversee and automate the time-consuming daily tasks within the business’s operation. Examples of business
functions ERP systems are involved with are: human resource, inventory management,
risk management, and supply chain management.
Amazon
Business model: order management, financials, HR,
purchasing, and receiving/inventory control.
ERP type used: Systems Analysis and Program
Development (SAP) and Oracle Fusion Cloud ERP
Name of software provider: Oracle Corporation
Details of how the system helped to provide the benefits:
Amazon switched to using SAP software when they could not
meet their long-term goals with their then-existing system. Amazon uses Oracle as their ERP. It has a huge database that holds information related to Amazon’s customers.
The Customer’s ordering process is automated while the order is taking place as
it automatically finds the nearest distributing center for the quickest delivery.
This ERP system speeds up the order fulfilment process and reduces any
distribution mistakes. By using this system, Amazon reduced 50% of its customer
service contacts in four years (from 1999 to 2003) because of fewer mistakes.

Hormel Foods
Business model: supply chain management, enterprise
performance management, and human resources
strategy:
ERP type used: Oracle ERP
Name of software provider: Oracle Cloud Applications suite
Details of how the system helped to provide the benefits:
Oracle ERP is a cloud-based software
solution that is used to automate back-office processes and day-to-day
business activities. By implementing this system Hormel gained a unified system
to standardize business processes, data, and decision-making. “We have
visibility into every business from the same point of view” as opposed to the
multiple different systems they had running. They now have a forecasting model
to pinpoint growth opportunities across its many brands and now that they are using
a centralized platform, they are able to notice things that weren’t apparent
before. It is now easier for them to analyze their different vendors and even
found that some of their brands paid more than others for the same product. With the entire company running on one ERP
system, every brand does financial reporting in the same way. “Whether it’s
their cash flow, their income statement, or their balance sheet items,” Sheehan
says. In other words, all that teamwork enhanced their ability to operate as
one team.
