Why Companies Struggle with Information System Implementation

Information Systems are a “critical tool for all businesses. They allow you to monitor profitability, manage inventory and products, respond to customer demands, improve financial management, and provide banks, partners, investors, and key stakeholders with vital and timely information”. (1)

Although an information system may be running efficiently and smoothly, the cost of maintaining, implementing, and running over a long period may be over their initial budget. Sometimes companies may run over budget before they complete the system.

Time frame, a company may underestimate the time frame to create and implement their information system, by being behind in their time frame it can impact its budget, delivery date, and overall budget.

An example of when it went over budget and past its time frame is: “the FiReControl project “They wanted to “build nine networked high-tech control hubs for the fire brigade in England, replacing 46 existing centers”.  However, “The UK government canceled the project in December 2010 after concluding that it could not be delivered in an acceptable time frame. At the point the decision was made an estimated £245 million had been spent on the project and the cost of completion was estimated as £635 million, more than five times the original projection of £120 million.” (2)

Due to the length of time, it may take to implement an information system, especially if it is a large or complex system, the company's original input data may be out of date by the time they have completed the system, meaning they would be constantly going around in circles trying to keep the project updated.

An Example of an outdated system is: “In 2017, Equifax suffered a massive data breach that exposed the personal information of millions of customers. The attack was made possible by a vulnerability in the Apache Struts web framework, which was running on an outdated version of the Equifax server. The vulnerability had been patched several months prior, but the company had not installed the update”. (3)

The data in the system may be entered incorrectly, and information in the system may be inaccessible due to incorrect or incomplete data. This can be extremely serious in high-importance companies or services such as hospitals. For example, instead of typing a dosage of 0.5ml, an employee may type in 5ml instead.
